What is Revision Rhinoplasty? Revision Rhinoplasty — Correcting Failed Nose Surgeries

Whether you are unhappy with the structural appearance of your nose, or you have struggled with breathing and sleeping soundly at night, revision rhinoplasty can correct cosmetic and functional issues.

A Custom Surgical Procedure

The surgeon will make incisions to access the nose structure. For minor changes, the incisions may be inside the nostrils. For more extensive repairs, the incision is made at the base of the columella, the cartilage separating the nostrils. This is the most common incision site of the first nose surgery. The shape you desire will be achieved by adding support to the structure or repositioning bone, tissue, or cartilage. The incisions are then closed, and a splint is applied for support.

Is a Revision Right for Me?

If you are healthy and were not satisfied with the initial surgery, whether in appearance or breathing function, revision rhinoplasty is the answer. Our board-certified surgeons are experts at rhinoplasty revisions and will meet with you to discuss the surgical approach. Each step of the surgery will be explained including the technique used, anesthesia, and what to expect during your recovery. We want you to be informed and feel comfortable with your decision.

Why Have a Revision Rhinoplasty?

After nose reshaping surgery, it can be devastating to be left with an unsatisfactory outcome. Rhinoplasty is one of the most complex of all facial plastic surgeries and requires an uncommon level of skill and knowledge — so much so that many plastic surgeons do not offer the service. A revision may be necessary to repair any of the following:

  • Asymmetry
  • Nose too large
  • Nose too small
  • Collapsed nose bridge
  • Hump on bridge too high
  • Breathing problems
  • Pinched nose tip
  • Nose shape is wrong: too wide, thin, long, or short

Revision Rhinoplasty FAQ

What is recovery like?

Revision rhinoplasty could require more healing time than your initial surgery, based on the extent of the corrections needed. You can expect a similar recovery as your first nose surgery with bruising and swelling in the first stage of healing. The stitches will be removed after the tissues have healed. You can expect to return to work or other activities in about a week to ten days. You will need to wait two to three weeks before you engage in strenuous activities or exercise.

Will I have scars?

Our surgeons use the most advanced techniques to ensure minimal scarring. External or open rhinoplasty will leave a scar that is virtually invisible at the base of the nose. Endonasal or closed procedures do not leave visible scars.

Is revision rhinoplasty covered by insurance?

Revision rhinoplasty performed for cosmetic reasons is not covered by insurance. Some health insurance plans may cover the surgery when performed to improve breathing function.

What does revision rhinoplasty cost?

Every revision rhinoplasty is unique, and the cost varies, based on what is needed. Some complex revisions can take as long as five to six hours. The first step is to meet with our facial plastic surgeon to evaluate your nose condition and discuss the surgical approach needed.
